The question we are asked most often is also the simplest one: is my child old enough for a Wobbel? Or far too old already?
The short answer: there is a board for almost every age. The difference is not whether a child can wobble, but which size makes sense under their feet. A balance board that is too small gets dull quickly. One that is too big does not move well.

The age ranges overlap on purpose. Children grow at their own pace, and in the years in between it is height that decides, not the birthday.
The first two years: the Starter
The Starter is the smallest board and usually the first one a child tries something out on. Balancing upright comes once a child walks steadily, often around eighteen months. Some children climb on sooner, others watch for months. Both are fine.
At 70 cm the Starter is short, and at 2.1 kg light enough for a small child to move it themselves. That is the point: the child decides what the board is today.
Around the second year the Starter often becomes too short. Then it is the Original's turn, and that one stays for many years.
2, 3 and 4 years: the Original
For a two year old the Original is generous at first. That is deliberate. At two it is slid down and rocked on, at four it is jumped from, balanced on and built into a bridge. Same board, different play.
If you are looking for a balance board for a child of two to four and want to buy only one, the Original is almost always the right choice. On average it lasts until secondary school.
5 and 6 years: still the Original
At this age many parents ask whether their child is not already too big for the Original. In most cases, no. Five and six year olds use the board differently from toddlers: they stand across it, they rock standing up, they build it into worlds of their own.
Only when the feet reach past the edges, which makes the rocking unsteady, is it worth looking at the Large. For most children that does not happen before the seventh or eighth birthday.
7 to 10 years: when the Large fits better
The Large is 100.5 cm long and 35 cm wide. That is a good thirteen centimetres more length and four and a half more width than the Original, and those centimetres are exactly what matters as a child grows. Both feet fit side by side without crowding.
A child of eight or ten who has never stood on a balance board is best starting straight on the Large. If there is already an Original in the house and it still serves well, there is no reason to switch. Many families keep both, so two children each have a board of their own.
12 and up: the XL, adults included
At 115.5 cm the XL is the largest board and carries a grown adult easily. It lives in teenagers' rooms, in practice rooms and, more often than you would think, next to a desk. Anyone looking for a balance board for themselves rather than for a child usually means the XL.
When is a child too old for a balance board?
We get that question often, and the answer is unremarkable: never. A Wobbel has no rules and no goal, so there is no point at which it is finished. What changes is the use. The slide becomes a bridge, the bridge becomes a place to read, and one day someone is standing on it taking a phone call.
When a board stops being used, it is usually the size and not the age.
What matters more than age
Height. A tall six year old is better off on the Large than a slight eight year old. Picture the feet, not the birth year.
The floor. On carpet or a soft floor you do not need felt. On parquet, laminate and tiles, felt protects the floor, your ears and the board itself. That is the only difference between the two versions.
Space. Count on about two metres of clear space around it. A Wobbel moves, and children move with it.
Supervision. One child on the board at a time, and an adult nearby. That holds for every age and every size.
Common questions
Which balance board suits a 2 year old?
The Original. It is generous at two and lasts for many years afterwards. If you already have a Starter, it can happily stay in use a while longer.
Which balance board suits a 6 year old?
Usually the Original. Only if the child is tall for their age and the feet reach past the edges is the Large the better choice.
Which balance board suits an 8 or 10 year old?
The Large. At 100.5 cm it gives bigger children room for both feet side by side. If you are starting at eight or ten, start there.
Does a Wobbel grow with the child?
Yes. The Original covers the years from 2 to 12, because it is not the board that changes but the play on it. That is why a Wobbel rarely ends up in the attic.
Do I need felt?
On hard floors such as parquet, laminate or tiles, yes: the felt protects the floor, softens the sound and looks after the board. On carpet or a soft floor you do not need it.
Can two children stand on one Wobbel together?
No. One child on a Wobbel at a time. If two children want to play together, each needs their own board.
